FAQ

Canadian Tax — Common Questions

It depends on your residency status and whether you have Canadian-source income. If you are a Canadian resident, you must file a T1 regardless of where your income is earned. If you departed Canada, you file a T1 Emigrant return for the year of departure. If you have rental income, pensions, or other Canadian-source income, you may also have Canadian withholding and filing obligations as a non-resident.
Form T1135 (Foreign Income Verification Statement) must be filed by Canadian residents who own specified foreign assets with a total cost of more than CAD $100,000 at any point during the year. This includes foreign bank accounts, stocks in foreign companies held outside a Canadian account, and interests in foreign trusts. Penalties for late filing are $25/day up to $2,500.
Yes. This is our core cross-border service. We coordinate your Canadian T1 and U.S. 1040 (or 1040-NR) together, apply the U.S.–Canada Tax Treaty to eliminate double taxation, and ensure the foreign tax credits and treaty elections are filed correctly on both sides.
The standard T1 deadline is April 30. Self-employed individuals and their spouses have until June 15, but any balance owing is still due April 30. If you have U.S. filing obligations, those deadlines (April 15 / June 15 for non-residents) run concurrently and must be coordinated.
Yes. We represent clients before the CRA at all stages — correspondence audits, field audits, and GST/HST audits. We also assist with Notices of Objection, Taxpayer Relief applications, and Voluntary Disclosure for prior-year non-filers.
